Motorcyclists are amongst the more vulnerable of road users and any improvements in road design can only improve their safety. Main Roads WA guidelines, such as Austroads "Guide to Traffic Engineering Practice Part 15 - Motorcycle Safety" help local government road engineers accommodate the needs of motorcyclists. But while the benefits of this guide are understood by Main Roads, there appears to be little use or understanding of this guide by local government road engineers. It is the intention of this paper to present a motorcyclists perspective of some of the common and more dangerous practices in the local urban road environment and, through this process, make local government road engineers more aware of the special needs of motorcyclists. It is also the intention of this paper to suggest measures that will assist with the design of "motorcyclist compatible" local council roads and help ensure that they comply with the traffic engineering guidelines.
