Samenvatting

This paper deals with the identification of factors which influence the number of accident involvements a motorist has in a given period of time or when driving a given number of kilometres, and of factors which influence the amount of damage. The investigations are based on a sample concerning insurances of motor cars and estate cars from a large Dutch insurance company. In spite of the inferior quality of the data, it may be concluded that such factors as: the number of kilometres driven per year, the locality where the motorist usually drives, the age and driving experience of the motorists, the make, type and price of the vehicle, and the additional excess, are strongly associated with the number of accidents and/or with the amount of damage. Various other factors considered appear not to be associated with the number of accidents and/or the amount of damage.
