It is generally assumed that improved visibility of motor vehicles can make an important contribution to road safety. There are various ways to improve the visibility of motor vehicles. One of these is the Daytime Running Lights (DRL). Based on current data the SWOV has estimated a reduction of about 5% in the total number of injury accidents. These considerations have a significant influence on the decision to introduce compulsory use of DRL in the Netherlands after 1990. Basic research activities to enable an evaluation study of the effect of DRL are described in the Masterplan. For a shortened version in England see PB 29463.
