A brief history of motorway lighting is presented. Method of lighting motorways, motorway lighting maintenance vehicles comparing types with costs, problems associated with working on motorways, costs of coning and signing for lane closures, operational experience including bulk change and fault repair costs, policy for frequency of carrying out repairs etc. are considered.
