Samenvatting

This paper presents a study conducted by the British Institute of Traffic Education Research (BITER) and funded by the AA Foundation for Road Safety Research. The project began in 1993, and its outcome was a research report and a road safety education resource, On the Move. This resource was designed for use by teachers and children in the later years of primary school, and published in 1995. The project studied a child-based approach to road safety education for 8-to-11-year-olds. Its objectives were to: (1) establish methods of listening to children; (2) develop a road safety education resource; (3) evaluate the resource with children and teachers in primary schools; and (4) survey the travel patterns of the target age group, 8-11. After the project was set up, its first stage was to listen to children; this was followed by development of the resource, development of the evaluation measures, the main study, writing the final report, and revising and developing the resource. The main study began with pre-tests with 1122 children in nine experimental schools and seven control schools. Teachers were briefed and resources were used in the experimental schools. Then post-tests were conducted with 980 and 910 children. The project resulted in a very usable resource, whose format allows children to be involved.
