SCRAM traffic system is an enhanced version of SCATS and it also provides for Melbourne's Tram and Bus priority. The SCRAM computer system operates on three levels of hierarchy. As at September 1989, there are 1350 sets of traffic signals linked to SCRAM out of a total of 2300 sets of traffic signals in Melbourne. In this paper, we will discuss what computers are used, how they are linked together, and software packages which are developed to monitor and manage the SCRAM system. We will also see how the Melbourne Metropolitan Control Centre utilises these packages to improve traffic control and management. These packages include the SCRAM graphics intersection monitoring system, Control Centre fault logging system, system, Control Centre fault logging system, VIATEL accident information system, Freeway Surveillance system, Traffic speed advisory system and Westgate Bridge monitoring system. Finally, there will be a brief note on our future directions and in the choice of computers in pursuing our goal (A).
