Hopes from doctors’ leaders that the drink driving limit would be reduced soon to help prevent car crashes and save lives have been dashed by MPs. MPs on the parliamentary transport committee have published a report that says the government should aim for an “effectively zero” limit of 20 mg alcohol per 100 ml of blood in place of the current drink drive limit of 80 mg per 100 ml. This, however, is a long term aim, says the report which calls for police to be given stronger enforcement powers and for ministers to retain the current 12 month mandatory disqualification minimum penalty.
