The San Diego Intercollegiate Impaired Driving Initiative was a 2 year project aimed at reducing the incidence of alcohol-impaired driving and other alcohol-related consequences among 50,000 students attending 4 institutions in San Diego County. The project was carried out by students and involved 4 stages. `Scanning' was a method of identifying potential risk factors in the campus and community environment. In the `analysis' stage information was collected in a structured way. Interventions were planned for the `response' phase including: a) a responsible beverage service, b) media advocacy and c) policy. The 'assessment' phase noted
