In this paper, the development of a Multi-Lane Traffic Monitoring System (MTMS) is described, which is laser based, low cost, safe, non-intrusive, and useful in measuring and classifying vehicular traffic over multiple lane roadways. Other advantages provided by the MTMS are: compatibility with existing traffic monitoring protocols, a self-contained system or a modular sensor interface, and capability of remote configuration and data retrieval. The data presented in the paper include: preliminary design attributes such as LADAR (laser radar), processing algorithms, user programmable control interface, and prototype performance specifications.
