Samenvatting

The Government of Malaysia is currently developing and building a new Federal Administrative Centre, Putrajaya which will be the future seat of all Federal Government Departments. Putrajaya is currently in the process of implementing the Intelligent Transport System (ITS). This Seminar Paper outlines the provision of one of the Intelligent Traffic Management Systems, the Variable Messaging Systems (VMS). It must be stated that the impact of the VMS is much diminished in a planned city such as Putrajaya, as all the required permanent signs have been provided for. It is only in the case of emergencies and during functions hosted at Putrajaya, that the greatest use of the VMS is seen, when conventional fixed signs cannot provide this dynamic information. Route information in Putrajaya has been designed along hierarchical principles and therefore the VMS follows the same hierarchical structure. The VMS was then designed to be located on all approaches of the exit point, as it would be needed for decision making by the road user. The VMS message display is summarised. The installation of the system is described. For the covering abstract see ITRD E209471.
