The topic of this research is to find the factors that determine the competiveness of multimodal transport compared to unimodal transport, such as the car. Reviewing the literature and interviews with experts produced the following results. Multimodal transport can contribute to the policy objectives of the Dutch government. Most consumers make a pragmatic and habit based choice in their day-to-day decisions on modes of transport. The possibilities for a succesful multimodal alternative are dependent on the specific circumstances in a spatial relationship. Two types of conditions were found to be crucial for the success of multimodal transport. At the demand side, there are a minimum of level of level of transport demand, the accessibility of the destination, the characteristics of the specific route, the effectiveness of parking policy and other supporting policies and the consumer's perception of the multimodal alternative. At the supply side, there are the attunement of the transport networks, the agreement between all parties involved in a multimodal combination and the price quality ratio.
