Samenvatting

Traditional transportation models are not suited to describe multimodal trips properly. For the assessment of investments for transfer facilities, however, a realistic description is required. This paper describes such a model, which on the supply side is based on combining the networks of all modes in a single supernetwork. On the demand side, a multi-user class approach is followed with respect to travel choice modelling. The traditional distinction between mode choice and route choice is replaced by route choice in a supernetwork. The paper describes the main steps in a supernetwork approach: building a supernetwork, generating a realistic set of routes, and modelling route choice given such a set of routes. The paper shows the results for a real world application. The route set generation step is based on combining route sets found for different traveller population segments, having different preference weights and different vehicle availability, by applying a probit route selection. It leads to a realistic variety of route types, consisting of unimodal and multimodal routes. The route choice modelling step uses the Paired Combinatorial Logit model, which can deal with route overlap. The assignment of travellers per population segment shows that travellers might use routes found for other populations too. Combining route sets proves to be a useful approach in obtaining a realistic route set. All results with respect to route set composition and route assignment per population segment appear plausible and match expectations.
