Within the presented research project the sustainability assessment methodology for road infrastructures, last modified in 2015, is developed further towards a methodology usable for the assessment of sequences of elements during the early design phase (module 1). The required adaptions are mainly caused by the expected input data, which should be available according to the German RE 2012. Additionally results from other research projects, administrative and legal guidelines as well as technical regulations are considered. To study and if applicable modify the established calculation and assessment procedures in a first step the sequence of road elements and the sixth criteria group, the location quality, have to be defined. With the development of an assessment chart for the sustainability of sequences of road elements the last module for the completion of the sustainability assessment methodology for road infrastructures is added.
From this project the assessment of sequences of road elements in the service phases 2 – 4 according to the German HOAI is available and can improve the decision processes during the preliminary design (service phase 2) and the detailed decision during the final design (service phase 3). Because of the two step assessment after each of these service phases the assessment methodology implies more transparency and improves the leverage effect of specific criteria, which could contribute to the political reasoning of the chosen design variant.
