This article presents the results of the first year of monitoring fleet maintenance expenditure. The aim is to establish some actualcosts against which operating engineers can compare their own figures. Over 140 operators contributed information on about 6000 vehicles. The vehicles under study are classified as up to 7.5 tonnnes, 11-17 tonnes, 20-24 tonnes, 24-30 tonnes, and over 32 tonnes. Municipalvehicles are listed separately. Details are provided of: chassis type, model, age, and type of work undertaken (emergency, municipal, multi-drop distribution, point-to point trunking, and on/off road work). Figures are provided for maintenance costs in terms of parts costs per 1000km and hours of maintenance per 1000km.
