Samenvatting

The report starts with some key statistics about the country and the distribution of trips, distance covered and fatalities over modes. The mass motorisation after World War II has brought about a dense network of freeways, and many studies have been conducted to draw up guidelines for the design of roads. New and rather ambitious goals to limit the growth of car traffic have been set in the Second Transport Structure Plan. This has stimulated the interest for capacity and traffic operations and has led to new studies in this field, some of which are presented in this report. Special attention is given to a new manual for designing bicycle facilities as this is the first time this effort has been made in a country with such an important role for the bicycle as a means of transport. Finally, some possible measures to enhance operations on the existing network in the future are sketched. (A)
