Samenvatting

The practice of rehabilitating drinking drivers by means of psychological programmes is discussed. It is suggested that a comprehensive medical-psychological assessment is an essential prerequisite for a successful programme. This requires a specialist in the field. The accuracy of predicting the outcome of rehabilitation and which criteria to use are considered. Criteria include blood alcohol content at the time of the accident, age, number of convictions, marital status, employment, residence, intensity of police enforcement and medical indicators. Psychological criteria which also have to be taken into account are noted.
