Samenvatting

Man Machine Interface standards exist, but the majority relate to the office or manufacturing environment, and are not applicable to systems designed for use in vehicles. This paper reviews the types of standard that exist, and highlights the importance of developing performance based standards for future RTI applications. These standards are technology independent and equally applicable to part or whole systems. Striving to achieve performance standards actually encourages innovative design. This paper outlines the framework for standards development. It argues that the production of such standards is one necessary step towards making RTI (Road Transport Informatics) systems safe, usable and efficient, and hence contribute to their acceptance by the target population.
