Future cars will be integrated into large information systems, where various kinds of information might be sent to and from a car. Apart from information about current traffic conditions or weather forecasts, cars could offer access to the internet enabling electronic commerce or mobile commerce such as online banking and online brokerage, etc. In order to handle this flood of information, a common platform is needed that allows for the integration of the different information streams. It is explained why the use of common internet protocols is inadequate and the wireless application protocol (WAP), which was developed especially for use in mobile and wireless networks, is described. Its advantages for use in traffic telematics are outlined.
