The Japanese approach : a separate peak-hour timetable at the Dutch Railways ? Although there are many more passengers in the peak hours than in the off-peak hours, off-peak trip distances are longer. We can cope with these different passenger needs by adapting the train product, for example by offering more capacity per train (longer trains, double-deckers, or more room for standing passengers). Alternatively we can run extra peak services on existing and new routes. This may require changes to train running and station stopping times and therefore a different service pattern. A short summary of the solutions adopted for this problem by various Railway Companies across the world concludes this paper, without finding a universal answer to the peak hour problem.
