Samenvatting

In march 1978 a small working group was established by the institution's transportation board to identify whether the efforts being made in the UK to improve road safety were adequate to meet the problems. The working group looked at the need for action in three areas: the road environment, vehicle safety measures, and the road user and road usage. Recent actions on road safety were considered. The initiatives required of the government on the compulsory wearing of seat belts, regularisation of the drink-driving law, and motorcycling were examined. Actions that could be taken by local authorities, by the police, by engineering institutions, and by educational establishments were also covered.
