A new control method of adaptive cruise control was constructed in which the optimal headway distance control characteristics are obtained through driver's throttle control. Driver's throttle control behavior was analyzed in three situations of headway distance control. It was made clear that the throttle operation by the driver can be described by equations using a small number of parameters. An adaptive cruise control system was constructed by using this driver model, and it was confirmed that such a control can be realized without giving any significant disorderly feeling to the driver.
