Samenvatting

Effective tunnel management operations requires the coordinated and real-time operations of various traffic control, mechanical, and electrical subsystems. Significant traffic management development has been made recently in Shanghai, China to improve the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the surveillance, communication, and control functions of several underwater tunnels across the YangTze River that links the Shanghai City and PuDong New Economic Development Zone in China. A new generation of tunnel management systems has been successfully implemented to integrate various traffic surveillance, traffic control, mechanical, and electrical equipment, provided by equipment vendors all over the world to support the integrated operational needs. This operational experience has demonstrated the subsystem integration, integrated workstation design, and expert system based decision support functions can greatly improve the operational efficiency and emergency responses.
