Samenvatting
A national effort is underway in the U.S. to encourage greater use of brownfields to meet many of the economic, environmental, and social challenges faced by cities and rural communities. Results of recent research funded by the Federal Highway Administration reveal that transportation plays a key role in promoting the cleanup, reuse, and redevelopment of brownfields. This article provides and discusses 3 case examples from Oregon, Kansas City, and New Jersey in which transportation projects were used to help with the redevelopment of formerly contaminated industrial properties and played a major role in the successful use of these sites to promote economic development and community revitalization.
