This paper discusses important developments during the evolution of surface texture technology for concrete pavements. The paper looks at the three important characteristics: texture, friction and noise. Finally, it discusses recent efforts in Europe and the United States that may again produce a shift from the common transverse tine surface. The paper presents preliminary findings from ongoing research that is focusing on how to balance or optimize the concrete pavement surface texture for skid resistance and noise. The preliminary results indicate that transverse tining may not be the optimal solution. (A)
