Samenvatting

With the trend towards end result and performance specifications, there has been a commitment by the NZ contracting industry to invest in new testing equipment so as to be able to better define the performance parameters of their products. The SHRP testing equipment recently purchased by Fulton Hogan is one example which will allow the matching of binders for hot mix, chip seals and slurry seals to the climate of a particular site. This paper gives a description of the SHRP testing methods and design approach and discusses the possible application of SHRP testing to chip seal binders. Pavement temperatures for New Zealand are given and the consequences of these temperatures on current chip sealing `recipes' is discussed. The need for a low temperature test for chip seal binders is covered, as well as the description of a potential candidate test method, the Modified Vialit Plate Test. The results given indicate that there should be a better matching of the binders used in chip sealing in New Zealand to the climatic conditions of the site. (A)
