Samenvatting

With effect from 1 June 1994, Switzerland's traffic regulations were changed to give the pedestrian the right of way at a pedestrian crossing when there is an evident intention on the part of the pedestrian to use the crossing. This makes the position of pedestrians much stronger because they are no longer required explicitly to signal car drivers that they intend to cross the road. The objective of this study was to find out whether and to what extent the behaviour of drivers and pedestrians had changed in the year since the new regulation came into force.
