Samenvatting

The prevention of accidents and their associated consequences is the aim of an incident management on inter-urban corridors. The reduction in the number of accidents has great benefits for drivers on the road network as well as general social benefits in terms of socio-economic costs. To meet these demands the roadside warning and information system COMPANION has been developed. It warns drivers of traffic or weather related dangers to improve traffic safety. COMPANION has been installed in the north of Munich and two further installations on motorways near Verona and in Scotland are planned for 1997 within the 4th Framework Programmes INFOTEN and TABASCO. First results in Munich show an increase of traffic safety caused by an activated COMPANION system. This paper shows the comparison of the three test sites, the benefits of the multi-site testing and the evaluation results of the traffic related impacts by COMPANION.
