Samenvatting

A presentation is made of the results of a research study in which pedestrian-actuated traffic signal solutions were implemented to test their effectiveness in enhancing the safety and comfort of pedestrians in crossing facilities with little inconvenience to motorised traffic. Three pilot real life traffic control schemes have been implemented where a number of different pedestrian friendly traffic control strategies have been tested and proved viable e.g. automatic triggering of pedestrian demand before they actually reach the crossing points, extension of pedestrian green time to serve late comers or advancement and extension of it when pedestrian demand reaches a certain threshold.
