Samenvatting

New in-vehicle systems: wanted or not ? : integrated driver assistance from the motorist’s perspective. The car driver of tomorrow will enjoy an increasing variety of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that assist in the driving task. An important step in the development of ADAS is the integration of driver support functions. However, little insight exists yet into this issue. This paper discusses a user needs survey that provides more insight into integrated driver assistance from the motorist’s point of view. By means of an Internet questionnaire car drivers are asked to indicate their needs for driver assistance during certain driving tasks (e.g. congestion driving) and circumstances (e.g. reduced visibility). From these user needs, consequences for the integration of driver support functions can be deduced with respect to technology, HMI, and functional operation. Preliminary results of the survey indicate that there seems to be a need for functions that provide information or warnings. This points to the importance of aspects surrounding the HMI, such as information management. Respondents also have a preference for functions that include a form of communication, such as a warning for an unsafe headway in a curve, which implies communication with a digital map. The results further show that the ideal driver support system should be personal, and thus taking into account the driver’s skills and preferences. (Author/publisher)
