Recent fatality statistics derived primarily from the federal Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) reveal some interesting trends in motor vehicle deaths. Since 1998, motor vehicles deaths have been constant at 15 per 100,000 people. This trend is also evident in fatalities resulting from alcohol-impaired driving. While the percentage of fatally injured drivers with BACs of 0.08 or more have declined from 1982-2001, since 1997, the percentages have remained almost the same. Motorcycle deaths, however, have increased since 1997, while deaths involving children younger than 13 as occupants, pedestrians, and bicyclists have been declining since 1975.
