Samenvatting

The need of maintaining a proper environment in conjunction with continuing growth of urban transport commensurate with the national growth scenario need not be over emphasized. There is a need to generate a basic database as well as the rational analytical approach to predict the behaviour of the environmental deterioration due to vehicular traffic on urban arterials. In this paper, noise prediction models such as Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Calculation of Road Traffic Noise (CORTN) and air pollution prediction models like CALINE have been studied and adapted to Indian conditions. The analytical modeling approach that has been utilized in the nationally coordinated project for predicting road traffic noise and air pollution has been discussed and also abatement strategies to reduce the present pollution levels so as to provide improved environment for people living and working along major arterials in urban areas.
