Non-euclidean metrics in nonmotorized transportation.

An investigation into the use of simple, real-world, non-euclidean metrics for pedestrian and bikeway planning is described. The nature of non-euclidean geometry is described and general applications are presented. Sensitivity of mode choice with respect to time is explained. The concept of geometric delay is discussed. In addition, principles of non-euclidean metrics are applied to three areas: taxicab geometry, efficiency of alternative network designs, and plastic space. Results indicate that the application of non-euclidean metrics is a useful tool in planning human-powered transportation facilities. Further areas of research that will enhance and broaden the use of non-euclidean metrics are identified.
