This paper was presented at the `Northumberland Strait Bridge Crossing' session. The Northumberland Strait Crossing Project will connect the Provinces of Prince Edward Island (PEI) and New Brunswick (NB) on the east coast of Canada. Construction of this 13 km-long (8.1 mi) bridge started in 1993 and is scheduled for completion in 1997, at an estimated cost of C$840 million (US$615 million). Project Requirements developed by Public Works Canada required that design criteria be specifically developed for this unique structure. The challenges of harsh environmental conditions, short construction time, and the Public Works Canada requirements have been met through innovative design concepts and features, and the most advanced construction techniques available in the industry today, including large-scale precasting and erection of exceptionally large concrete superstructure and sub-structure elements.
