Observational techniques in systems research and development. Paper presented at the Symposium held in Amsterdam, September 1969, sponsored by the International Ergonomics Association.

An attempt has been made to identify and to describe possible objectives which observational techniques may satisfy in evaluating man-machine systems. The techniques have been discussed in the context of military design and development, but they can be applied usefully to human performance in any system.
