MEASUREMENTS OF 18-HOUR AND HOURLY NOISE LEVELS ARE REPORTED IN THE REGION OF THREE ROAD JUNCTIONS IN THE U.K. THESE CONSIST OF A LARGE ROUNDABOUT ON A CITY RING ROAD AND TWO TRAFFIC SIGNALISED ROAD INTERSECTIONS. THE RESULTING LEVELS ARE PRESENTED AS A FUNCTION OF DISTANCE FROM THE JUNCTION ALONG CHOSEN ACCESS ROADS FOR TWO OF THE JUNCTIONS. PREDICTIONS OF THE L10 NOISE LEVELS ARE MADE AT THE MEASUREMENT SITES USING THE STANDARD U.K. PREDICTION METHOD AND THE MEASURED AND PREDICTED LEVELS ARE COMPARED. AGREEMENT BETWEEN MEASURED AND PREDICTED LEVELS IS OBTAINED TO WITHIN 2DB(A) AT ALL BUT A SINGLE POSITION. TENTATIVE CONCLUSIONS CAN BE REACHED FROM THE RELATIVELY FEW READINGS. IT IS OBSERVED THAT THE PREDICTED LEVEL PROGRESSIVELY EXCEEDS THE MEASURED LEVEL AT POSITIONS ADJACENT TO THE DECELERATION (APPROACH) LANE OF THE SELECTED FEEDER ROADS AS THE JUNCTION IS APPROACHED. OBSERVATIONS AT POSITIONS ADJACENT TO THE ACCELERATING (EXIT) LANES SHOW AN EXCESS OF MEASURED LEVELS OVER THOSE PREDICTED. THE DIFFERENCE IN LEVELS IS CHARACTERISTICALLY OF THE ORDER OF IDB(A). (A).
