Samenvatting

This paper presents an investigation on the differences and the analogies of two of the most accepted severity criterion, the Acceleration Severity Indexes (AIS) and the Flail Space Criteria. They are both based on measures of vehicle motion (mostly accelerations). The research is carried out by means of simple models and verified with 15 crash test data from TNO Delft, 1988-89. The tests cover a relatively wide range of speed and angle, using a Fiat Uno and a Fiat Regina, which were crashed into either the New Jersey type concrete barrier or the SINA deformable steel barrier.
