This document sets out a range of measures in hand or to be taken by the Department of Transport which will be of particular benefit to older road users. Pedestrian safety is the most serious road safety problem for those aged sixty and over. This is being addressed by the Department of Transport in three ways: (1) by providing a safer traffic environment, though traffic calming measures, local safety schemes; (2) by investigating ways of making pedestrian crossings safer with research into pedestrian detectors, and new audible signals; and (3) by developing and promoting advice for older pedestrians. Statistics are provided on : the percentage of car drivers who are aged 60-64, or 65 and over; road accidents among older road users. Some initiatives with other organisations such as local authorities are briefly described.
