Samenvatting

This article describes public transport improvements being made in London, UK, as part of its bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Much of the planned improvement will take place whether or not the city hosts the games. Transport links are under construction between airports and the centre. The Docklands Light Railway and other existing rail lines are to be extended and rolling stock is to be upgraded. Changes between transport modes are designed to be as simple and speedy as possible. Non-rail services include bus routes, cycle parks and pedestrian routes, and park and ride facilities. Stratford Regional station is being redeveloped to double its capacity and provide a major interchange for transport to Olympic venues. A dedicated service, the Olympic Javelin, will run on the high-speed Channel Tunnel Rail Link connecting the Olympic Park to both central London and a major park and ride facility in the county of Kent, with interchange to the international rail system, which will also receive new rolling stock.
