Many studies have been carried out to the influence of public lighting on traffic safety. In the city of Dordrecht a start is made to answer the question which public lighting can be considered as good. Since 1982 the city has a policy for energy conservation by switching of the public lighting, outside the town centre, during a part of the evening. A before and after study is made to its effect on traffic safety. The second aim of the study was to determine which limit of public lighting can still guarantee the traffic safety.
