Cyclists and moped riders have an exceptional position as regards the general priority rule on junctions or highways having the same classification, because they must give way to all other drivers coming from the left. What would be the effect if this were changed? The dutch institute for road safety research SWOV has tried to answer the question, by means of available accident data, of how the introduction of priority for slow traffic coming from the right could influence the kind of collision and the size of the influence under different circumstances. It is shown that the available data are insufficient to get an insight into the influence of the introduction of such a priority rule on traffic safety. This report is therefore limited and describes only that part of traffic safety that is considered to be mostly influenced by the measure being considered.
