Samenvatting

The aim of this study of literature is to gain insight in the terms, definitions and classifications used for concepts regarding accidents. Specific questions to be answered are: 1) Which are currently the most important terms and concepts encountered in surveillance systems on accidents ?; and 2) Which classifications and definitions are used to make the terms and concepts operational ? This study was carried out in several phases. First of all, an inventory was drawn up of surveillance systems in the Netherlands collecting information on accidents or victims of accidents. To compare the different terms, definitions and classifications used, it was necessary to first examine which variables concerning accidents are recorded by each surveillance system. Then the different terms, definitions and classifications are compared per variable. During this exercise it became clear that this kind of detailed information could not always be found in literature. Therefore, several experts were contacted by telephone for additional or more detaled information. Furthermore, some international (diagnostic) classifications, national classifications and other relevant classifications used by the surveillance systems, are evaluated.
