An inventory has been made of the injuries sustained by motorists treated as in or out- patients at the Traumatology Department of the University Hospital in Groningen between 1982 and 1987. It appears that male motorists under the influence of alcohol who have been involved in traffic accidents generally have a larger number of injuries and are more seriously injured than sober motorists. Data are presented which also show that the risk of the motorist himself sustaining injuries, including serious injuries, increases under the influence of alcohol.
