Samenvatting

This report is part of the project `Accident patterns and accident rates per road type'. This project focuses on the relation between the various road types in the Netherlands and certain accident and rate patterns. With an accident pattern we mean in this study the distribution of accidents among various accident types (crash opponents, manoeuvres) and various classes of accident severity. On sustainably-safe designed roads it is expected that certain accident types hardly ever occur anymore. Shifts in the accident pattern of road types are expected. This part of the project has studied the accident patterns of the various existing (`old') road types. What types of accident occur on the various road types and what is the distribution of crash opponents, manoeuvres, and accident severity? Among others, attention was paid to the following accident types: (1) Overtaking accidents; crossing over accidents on segments by pedestrians, cyclists, and (light) mopedists; collisions with parked cars; and obstacle accidents. It is expected that these will occur less often with the new sustainably-safe road situations; (2) Moped accidents. The new rule of `Moped on the carriageway' will influence their frequency, location, and collision partners; and (3) crossroad accidents. This accident type will be influenced by the new system of applying speed reducing measures and/or right-of-way regulations.
