Samenvatting

One objective of the Stadtinfoköln R&D Project is to improve mobility in the Cologne conurbation by providing collective as well as individual items of information in good time to road users as to the current traffic situation. For this purpose, a system of continuous and automatic travel time measurement in Motorized Individual Traffic (MIT) has been developed and implemented in a pilot system in the City of Cologne within the framework of the project. The MIT travel times which have been measured in this way form the basis for making an urban provision of collective and individual traffic condition and travel time information. It is intended that the road user is thus effectively supported in choosing for him or herself the most suitable means of transport in the respective traffic situation for reaching the city center. This essay explains the principle of correlative MIT travel time measurement using induction loop sensors. In particular, experience in operation is presented with respect to functioning and reliability of determining MIT travel time with the pilot system in the city. Video reference measurements are used to demonstrate the high degree of accuracy of MIT travel time measuring data.
