Samenvatting

In the past, Ontario deployed Model 170 traffic controllers for its COMPASS Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS). Faced with increasing ITS demands and an aging restrictive field controller infrastructure, Ontario committed to replace all Model 170 traffic controllers with Advanced Traffic Controllers (ATC). In an effort to maximize competition and cost/performance, a functional ATC specification based upon both the 2070 and off-the-shelf industry standard computer technology was developed. Ontario has successfully demonstrated that this approach is a viable alternative to ground-up ATC specifications. This paper examines Ontario's ATC experience, including portable software design, ATC standard development, procurement, transition methodology and deployment. (A*)
