Samenvatting

This report aims to assist in the design and construction of a cycle tunnel to be located in the Dutch province of South Holland. The limitations of the older cyclist should be adhered to as normative in formulating principles for design requirements. The stability and the braking capacity of the cycle are important factors regarding safety. The problem with respect to steeper gradients and descending slopes demand attention. The dimensions for cycle facilities, such as traffic tunnels, are subject to minimum requirements. Determinant factors are as follows: (1) the requisite track width; (2) the consideration that cyclists generally drive alongside each other; and (3) the fact that there is question of both mixed and two-way traffic. A minimal space margin should be included with respect to the tunnel wall. Several suggestions are made for marking and the use of colour on the road surface. The importance of the viewing distance is considered. Several tunnel lighting requirements are explained. The shared use of the road space by moped riders and cyclists, particularly with two-way-traffic, is associated with objections from the road safety perspective. Social safety, particularly with isolated slow traffic tunnels is at issue.
