In modern society, new technologies to make life easier are introduced continuously. In traffic and transport, new technologies are also being introduced. Global industries and other institutions which are active in the field of vehicle guidance, displayed their knowledge at the demonstration in Rijnwoude (DEMO '98) in the Netherlands. It became clear that developments in the field of vehicle guidance and vehicle intelligence (VI) are just starting. The implications of these developments for the government are not clear yet. TNO Inro has been commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management to investigate the expectations and attitudes on VI in Europe. In the course of this investigation, fourteen interviews with the industry and representatives of consumers in different countries are carried out and an international workshop has been held. There are a lot of so-called services which are associated with VI. The most important clusters of services are: anti theft and vehicle recovery, traffic and transport information, vehicle control, and communication and Car PC. Electronic toll and fee collection systems are expected to be imposed by the government in the near future. (A)
