Since the Second Transport Structure Plan (SVV-II), public transport has an important role in restricting the mobility growth in the Netherlands. Several measures have been implemented: considerable investments have been made in infrastructure, decentralisation of traffic policy, privatisation of public transport companies, and the introduction of competition. Still, the growth of public transport is disappointing. Public transport companies can succeed by: reconsidering their core business, the development of a long-term strategy, a customer-oriented approach, and by changing their internal organisation. (A)
