In recent years the Texas Transportation Institute has made significant contributions to the field of freeway design. The present paper is no exception: it describes the initial results of a research project, still in progress, which has considerable importance both for the design engineer and the research worker. The paper falls roughly into three sections: a discussion of study technique, an analysis of the effect of acceleration-lane length and ramp convergence angle on merging behaviour and a study of the factor influencing 'merging distances'. I should like to comment briefly on the second and third of these parts.
