Samenvatting

Alberta Transportation and Utilities has been involved with Expert System technology for the past four years. Out of the sixteen systems initiated, eleven expert systems are fully implemented. There are many issues both technical and non-technical that affect the implementation of expert systems. After being involved in developing these systems for the past four years it has been possible to identify certain characteristics that were found to be the most relevant to assess the chances of successfully developing an expert system. This paper will identify these characteristics and will also identify factors found to be useful during development to reduce programming time and ensure an earlier implementation.
